Environment
The position
The city has an advantageous position, because a number of important transport routes in water, road and rail transport intersect here. It is located on the Dresden–Prague route at a distance of 89 km from Prague and 75 km from Dresden. Three landscapes, which differ significantly in their geological origins, altitude and natural character, namely the Bohemian Massif, the Ore Mountains and the Lower Ore Mountain Basin, meet in the environs of the city. The Elbe River, which has created a valley which is up to 400 m deep, flows through the centre of the City.
The climate
The City of Ústí nad Labem lies in a temperate climatic zone. Thanks to the large differences in altitude (from 131 to 671 m above sea level) and the significant territorial segmentation, the temperatures and total rainfall are very different in individual parts of the city.

The environment
The city has a unique position which offers many options for hikers. Until the beginning of the 1990s, however, the ability to make use of these options was substantially limited due to the large degree of atmospheric and water pollution. In recent years, however, the purity of the atmosphere in Ústí nad Labem has achieved values which are common for other cities in the Czech Republic and the EU. The city received awards from the European Commission for its efforts aimed at improving the environment in 1999, 200 and 2001.
