The city has a favorable strategic situation on the crossing of water, road and railway lines.  It is situated on the main road line Prague – Dresden (89 km from Prague and 75 km from Dresden).  Three geographical units meet on the territory of the city: Czech Highland, Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) and Erzgebirge Basin that differ considerably in geological origin,  altitude and the overall natural character.  The center of the city is crossed by Elbe river that washed out 400 m deep valley in places.


The city of Usti nad Labem is situated in the area mild climate.  With respect to big altitude difference (131 m and 671 m above sea level) and relief division the tem-perature and rainfall differ in individual part of the city.

The city has a unique situation that enables and offers many tourist activities.  These activities were suppressed until the 90s of the 20th century due to great air-pollution and ground water pollution.  In the last years the air in Usti is as clean as in other big cities in the Czech Republic and EU.  The city was awarded  by the European Commission in 1999, 2000 and 2001 for its efforts to improve its natural environment.
